Every single day at my Avanta Clinic, patients walk through my doors with diabetes reports in their hands that are completely out of control, but when we sit down to talk about how it reached that stage, I come to conclusion that problem isn’t a lack of their efforts BUT it is FALSE INFORMATION in their mind.
Patients are bombarded with health advice from whatsapp forwarded messages in random friends and family groups, neighbors & internet shortcuts like random reels. They end up believing things that actively harm their own bodies while thinking they are doing everything right.
Let’s clear all that stuffs and bust the most dangerous diabetes myths I hear in my clinic every day.
Oh Really? The Reality: Your pancreas cannot tell the difference between white sugar & jaggery.
Many of my patients proudly tell me, “Sir, I stopped buying white sugar months ago. I only use jaggery now because it’s natural and has iron!”
While jaggery undergoes less processing than refined white sugar, it is still almost entirely sucrose & fructose. Once it enters your digestive system, it breaks down in glucose just as fast, spikes your blood sugar just as hard. If you have insulin resistance, replacing white sugar with heavy amounts of jaggery is like swapping a petrol car for a diesel car, you are still burning fuel that your engine cannot handle !
The Reality: Walking is great for your heart, but it is not enough to fix your muscle mass, insulin resistance.
A lot of patients say, “I complete my 5,000 steps every morning…bla bla bla…Why is my HbA1c still going up?”
Walking is a low-intensity aerobic activity. But your skeletal muscles are the primary storage units for glucose in your body. As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass (known as sarcopenia), which makes it even harder for our bodies to clear sugar from the blood ! Without some form of strength or resistance training, even simple bodyweight squats, wall pushes, or light resistance bands, you miss out on rebuilding the muscle tissue required to soak up those excess glucose naturally. So come on dear, lift some weights and show guts !
The Reality: Our traditional home-cooked meals can still pack a heavy carbohydrate overload.
Patients often protest, “See doctor, I don’t eat even junk foods, bakery items, or cold drinks. I only eat simple, home-cooked Gujarati food made by my mother!”
While home-cooked food is undoubtedly cleaner hygenic than packaged foods, traditional meals often feature a heavy daily ratio of refined wheat (maida/rotis), polished white rice, potatoes, generous splash of oil, paired with high-starch snacks. If your plate consists of 80% carbohydrates and very little protein or fiber, your liver and pancreas will still struggle to process it over the years, even if every single ingredient was bought fresh from the local market !
The Reality: Modern medicines are tools to protect your organs, not life sentences.
This is the biggest fear that keeps people away from clinics. Patients believe that the moment they swallow a pill or take insulin, their body becomes “addicted” to it, or that the medicine itself damages their organs.
Think of diabetes medication like glasses for your eyes. Wearing spectacles doesn’t make your eyes weaker; it helps you see clearly right now so you don’t trip over things. In the same way, early medications protect your blood vessels, heart, and kidneys from high-sugar toxicity. In many cases, if a patient catches pre-diabetes or early diabetes and commits intensely to diet, muscle building, and weight loss, we can actually reduce or taper down medications. But waiting until your pancreas is completely exhausted guarantees you will need lifelong support.
The Reality: “Sugar-free” does not mean “calorie-free” or “carb-free.”
Patients often buy biscuits, sweets, or chocolates labeled “Sugar-Free” and eat the entire box thinking it won’t affect their blood sugar.
Firstly, honey is packed with concentrated fructose and will spike your glucose levels just like regular sugar. Second, commercial sugar-free snacks are usually made with refined flour (maida) and fats. Even if they don’t contain sucrose, the other ingredients still break down into glucose and load your system with excess calories and unhealthy fats.
The Reality: Uncontrolled, high blood sugar destroys your kidneys and liver, not the standard medicines.
This is a tragic misunderstanding.! When patients finally agree to take medicines after years of high sugar, and later develop kidney or liver weakness, they blame the pills.
The absolute truth is the exact opposite. Long-term, uncontrolled high blood glucose acts like acid in your bloodstream, slowly destroying the tiny blood filters in your kidneys (diabetic nephropathy) and clogging your liver. Standard modern medicines are prescribed precisely to stop this destruction and keep your organs safe.
The Reality: Sugar intake is only one small piece of a much larger puzzle.
Many thin people walk into my clinic with high diabetes numbers and ask, “How is this possible? I never eat sweets!”
Type 2 diabetes is a complex metabolic condition driven by genetics, chronic stress, poor sleep, lack of muscle mass, stubborn belly fat (visceral fat), and insulin resistance. You do not need a sweet tooth to develop diabetes; your body’s internal chemistry can fail to handle normal carbohydrates due to lifestyle stress and genetics alone.
Diabetes doesn’t shout at you in the beginning. It whispers through myths and uncorrected habits until the damage is already done.
